The parish has a 911 emergency response system and is home to Acadian Ambulance Services Inc., the nation's largest rural ambulance company, offering ground and air paramedic services. For more than three decades, Acadian has provided advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care and disaster response to not only the metropolitan areas, but also rural areas of the community and offshore facilities in the Gulf of Mexico. The company started with two ambulances and eight medics in 1971 and is now the largest private rural ambulance service in the nation. Today, Acadian employs more than 2,000 people and covers 23,764 square miles in 135 parishes and counties. The company's highly skilled medics serve a total of 241,000 patients a year from 207 ground ambulances, seven helicopter ambulances and five fixed wing aircraft. The company also partnered with South Louisiana Community College to form the National EMS Academy to train new and existing medics for the future.
Lafayette also has numerous surgery centers, chemical dependency facilities, rehabilitation hospitals, long-term acute care hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, support groups and more than 100 dentists.
Local chapters of nonprofit organizations like the American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Foundation and American Heart Association are constantly working toward initiatives to improve the health of our citizens. |
